When walking on the hills, give yourself ample time to get back before darkness falls.

Safety

Notice to Walkers – Be AWARE!

  • Be aware of any local warnings.

  • Be aware of your skill level and choose routes accordingly.

  • Check the weather forecast before you go.

  • Ensure you have adequate clothing, food and equipment for the route and weather conditions.

  • Consider leaving a route card with your accommodation owner or visible in your parked car. The Glenelg Inn, local B&Bs and many self catering accommodation owners provide these. If you do leave a route card always remember to report on your return.

  • Carry an OS map and compass and know how to use them. Learn map reading and compass skills. Do not rely on a GPS as your main navigational tool. Use a GPS only as a back up to your navigation skills.

  • Do not rely on mobile phones. There are still many areas in the Glenelg area where reception is poor or unavailable.

  • Identify escape routes and danger areas e.g. watercourses, ridges. If turning back is the sensible option, take it.

  • Learn self help techniques.

  • Attend a Navigation, Winter Skills, First Aid, Avalanche Awareness or Self Help Course to help become more aware and self sufficient in the hills. See the Mountaineering Council of Scotland for more advice.

WARNINGS!

Forestry tracks

Over the last couple of years, forestry workings throughout the Glenelg Peninsula have led to the addition of many new forestry tracks and more will be added in the future with further planned workings. These are too new and often too small to be noted on OS maps or GPS mapping devices and may lead to confusion when starting your walk or when you come across unexpected paths while walking.

Sandaig

This is an easy and very popular walk to a stunning location but there have been new tracks laid over the last couple of years that branch off the main Sandaig track. Some online website descriptions are now out of date and can be confusing. Take local advice if in doubt.

Sandaig Coastal Path

THERE IS NO COASTAL PATH FROM SANDAIG TO GLENELG!!

Walking along the coast from Sandaig to Glenelg eventually becomes impassable when you meet cliffs that drop directly into deep water. Darkness falling before walkers could return has resulted in two recent call outs for the Glenelg Mountain Rescue Team. If you do decide to walk along this stretch of coast be aware you will have to return via the normal track.
